Iceland South coast super jeep tour

We leave Reykjavik in the morning leading South, toward the small town of Hvolsvöllur; on a clear day you can see from a distance the spooky volcano Hekla, known in medieval Europe as “the gateway to Hell” and the picturesque Westmannaeyar, an archipelago of 15 volcanic islands.
We drive on through the areas mostly affected by the 2010’ eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, enjoying the beautiful view of the infamous volcano side by side the green planes where, once, the notorious Njal’s Saga took place.
We make a stop at Skogafoss, a magnificent 60 meters high roaring waterfall: according to legends, it’s here that Þrasi the giant is said to have hidden his fabulous treasures.
From Skogafoss we head down to the sandy coastline for an exciting “jeep safari” on the endless black sand beaches; the Atlantic Surf pounding the deserted volcanic shores, together with the sight of Myrdalsjökull glacier’s ice cap standing above lush farmlands and green countryside, create an indescribable setting for our 4x4 Safari.
After few kilometers of sandy dunes and some river crossing we reach our next place of interest, Dyrholey: a promontory characterized by a narrow rock rim with a gigantic arch of lava standing in the sea.
Here, you have the chance to see from a close range the abundant birdlife, with puffins and eider ducks being the most common species in the area.
We continue our tour and stop at the beautiful Reynisfjara Beach which features interesting cliffs of basalt columns scattered with caves and rich in birdlife; just offshore are a group of three impressive basalt sea stacks rising from the Ocean, called Reynisdrangar (folktales say that they were three trolls who were pulling a ship to the shore, but they were caught by the rising sun and turned into needles of rock).
We start driving back to Reykjavik and take a detour to Solheimajökull glacier tongue, where we take a short walk up to its edge and get to touch its blue ice formations.
The last stop of this incredible tour along the South Coast is the amazing Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where the “bravest” can walk behind its tall, thundering wall of water.
The tour itinerary is flexible and it can be altered due to adverse weather conditions…better to be safe than sorry!!
