We depart from Reykjavik in the morning, driving toward Borgarfjordur, “the valley of the Sagas": an area of great natural beauty, rich in fertile farmlands and magnificent landscapes.

After a quick stop at Borg i Myrum, where once stood the old farm of Egill Skallagrimsson (910-990), Iceland’s best known Viking, we’ll visit “Delidartunguhver”, the most powerful thermal springs in Europe, which produces 180liter/sec of 100°C hot water.

The next stop is at the historical site of Reykholt, home of the Icelandic Chieftain, Snorri Sturluson (1179‐1241): “the founding father of the Nordic Sagas”. It is here, at Snorralaug, an ancient geothermal heated pool, that Snorri met his end by the hands of his enemies.

From Reykholt, it is only a short drive to the next places of interest: the scenic waterfalls of Hraunfossar (“the Lava falls") and Barnafoss (“The Children falls”).

Our tour continues into the highlands toward the Langjökull Glacier (the second largest in Iceland), throughout the rough and adventurous Kaldidalur (The “Cold Valley”): a haunted mountain pass, where many are the tales of courage of those who crossed it in the past….or perished trying! Once on the glacier, we’ll go for a drive on its vast ice cap or we’ll take a walk, depending on the daily weather/snow conditions. The panorama is breathtaking!

Following the Kaldidalur route, which runs along the western side of Langjökull, amazing views of barren landscapes, ice caps, mountains and volcanic sands will accompany us all the way down to Thingvellir National park: our next stop.

Thingvellir is a site of both historical and geological interest: along with being the place where the first parliament of Iceland was founded in 930 A.D, Thingvellir is also the finest place to see the Eurasian and the American tectonic plates drifting apart. A short walk through Almannagjá gorge, where the mid-Atlantic ridge rises above the water surface, is surely a unique experience for everyone!

From the National Park, it’s only a short drive back to Reykjavik.

 

The tour itinerary is flexible and it can be altered due to adverse weather conditions…better to be safe than sorry!!
