We leave Reykjavik in the morning leading South, toward the small town of Hvolsvöllur; on a clear day you can see from a distance the spooky volcano Hekla, and the picturesque Westmannaeyar, an archipelago of 15 volcanic islands.
We drive on through the fertile farmlands where, once, the notorious Njal’s Saga took place, until the amazing Seljalandsfoss waterfall is in sight. Soon the normal road ends and the rugged highlands route that will lead us to Thorsmork valley begin.
On the way, you get to take a close look at the infamous Eyjafjallajökull and see the natural side effects of its 2010’ eruption: hills covered by black volcanic ash, glacier flood plains and the remains of a glacier lagoon are the marks of the recent volcanic activity.
Once at Thorsmork (the valley of Thor), we hike along one of the many trekking routes the valley has to offer, have lunch (it’s included in the tour price) and also take a short walk through Stakkholtgja, a spectacular canyon with an hidden waterfall at its end. Green valleys, unique vegetation, wooded landscape and beautiful mountain ridges make Thorsmork one of Iceland’s most interesting natural wonders: a paradise for hikers and nature lovers.
There are quite a few unbridged glacial rivers that we have to cross to reach “The valley of Thor”…..It’s good fun and a big part of this daily adventure!!
On the way back to Reykjavik we stop at the spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where the “bravest” can walk behind its tall, thundering wall of water.
The tour itinerary is flexible and it can be altered due to adverse weather conditions…better to be safe than sorry!!
PLEASE NOTE: during the year 2024 will be running ONLY
