Landmannalaugar and Hekla volcano super jeep tour
We depart from Reykjavik in the morning, pass Selfoss, the biggest town of South Iceland, and drive inland toward the picturesque Thjorsardalur valley, where we stop to see a very unusual waterfall called Hjalparfoss.
We continue our tour into the desolated wilderness of the Highlands until we reach our next place of interest: the explosion crater Ljotipollur (“the Ugly Pool”); its blue cobalt lake surrounded by red, steep crater walls makes it a uniquely impressive crater, rather than an ugly one.
From Ljotipollur, it’s only a short drive to our main destination, Landammalaugar: “the pearl of the central highlands”.
After a fun hike through lava fields and multi-colored rhyolite mountains, it’s time for a warm bath in the natural geothermal pools this place is famous for. Here, in Landmannalaugar, will also have our pic-nic lunch (it’s included in the tour price).
In the afternoon, we make our way through few unbridged rivers, before taking a steep mountain trail up to the side of the World famous Volcano, Mt Hekla.
Lunar landscapes, ice, volcanic ashes and lava rocks shaped by centuries of volcanic activity create the perfect setting for the spooky Mt. Hekla, known in medieval Europe to be the “Getaway to Hell”; it is even mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Poem the “Divina Commedia”.
As we drive down the infamous volcano and head back to Reykjavik, the austere landscape will give space to the green, fertile farmlands of the southern lowlands.
The tour itinerary is flexible and it can be altered due to adverse weather conditions…better to be safe than sorry!!
The tour is usually operated in summer time from mid/end-June to end-Sept.
PLEASE NOTE: during the year 2024 will be running ONLY
