We depart from Reykjavik in the morning and, driving through Mosfellsdalur valley, we reach our first destination: Thingvellir National Park (it has been on UNESCO World Heritage list since 2004).
Thingvellir is a site of both historical and geological interest: along with being the place where the first parliament of Iceland was founded in 930 A.D, the National Park is also the finest place to see the Eurasian and the American tectonic plates drifting apart. A short walk through Almannagjá gorge, where the mid-Atlantic ridge rises above the water surface, is surely a unique experience for everyone!
Bordering Iceland’s biggest natural lake, Thingvallavatn, we head toward the famous hot springs area of Geysir, where you can admire the well-known “Strokkur” spouting steam and boiling water almost 30 meters into the air. Strokkur is very active, it erupts every 5 minutes, so if you miss it once…no worries, you’ll definitely get it on camera before we leave!
Back on the road, we get off the beaten track for the remote, yet stunning, volcanic planes of Haukadalsheidi: an area still untouched by mass tourism, where, with a bit of luck, Arctic foxes and Gyrfalcons can be spotted.
At the end of the mountain trail, the “Queen of the Icelandic waterfalls” awaits us: it’s the beautiful Gullfoss, our next stop!! We’ll walk up close to the ”golden waterfalls” and feel the incredible power of its glacial water.
On the way back to Reykjavik, we’ll take a short detour through the unusual 4x4 route known as “The Thousand waters trail”: untamed landscape and river crossing won’t disappoint you!!!
The tour itinerary is flexible and it can be altered due to adverse weather conditions…better to be safe than sorry!!
PLEASE NOTE: during the year 2024 will be running ONLY
